For a long time, the kitchen tap was the piece people gave the least thought to in a renovation: it was chosen almost last, and its only job was to turn the water on and off. That has changed. Today, the pull-out tap has become one of the most valued features when renovating a kitchen, to the point where many people won’t even consider anything else. So what’s behind this shift?

What exactly is a pull-out tap?

A pull-out tap is one whose head can be detached from the spout and moved freely around the sink, thanks to a flexible hose hidden inside. On most models, the head also offers two spray modes, a steady stream or a wider spray, which you switch between with a simple button. The result is a tap that’s no longer tied to a single fixed point above the sink, but moves with you as you work.

Why they’ve become a must-have

The first reason is simply practical: cleaning the sink thoroughly is much easier when the water can reach every corner, including the edges and sides, instead of having to move whatever you’re washing.

The second has to do with everyday life in the kitchen. Filling a tall pot, a vase or any container that doesn’t fit comfortably under a fixed spout is no longer a problem when you can bring the water straight to where you need it, rather than juggling the container to make it fit.

The third is versatility: being able to switch between a steady stream for filling or rinsing and a wider spray for washing vegetables, fruit or dishes with stuck-on food, without changing taps or accessories.

And then there’s the look. With its slimmer silhouette and integrated head, a pull-out tap fits naturally into today’s kitchens, where more and more care goes into the design of every element, including the one that was overlooked for years.

The IO pull-out kitchen range by GME

At GME we have several kitchen tap families with a pull-out function: you can choose Round, the Osmosis series, Design with its more industrial style, or Silver, an elegant, classic model. Designed for everyday use, they all feature a cold-start cartridge and a Neoperl aerator. IO offers kitchen options in every finish, so you can choose kitchen taps in brushed stainless steel, chrome, matt black, gold, copper or titanium. It’s the same range of finishes we already offer for bathrooms and shower screens, so your kitchen can match the rest of your home without giving up any colour.

Not everything is “pull-out”: other solutions for every kitchen

Pull-out is by far the most popular format, but it’s not the only solution designed for specific needs. For small kitchens, or where the sink is tucked into a corner, there are folding models, with a spout that swivels up to 90º and folds back against the wall when not in use, freeing up space on the worktop.

There’s also a growing trend towards osmosis-ready taps, which include a second, separate outlet for filtered water straight from the tap, with no need for bottles or a separate dispenser. And in every case, many of today’s models already come with cold-start cartridges, which keep the hot water circuit closed while the handle is in the central position, avoiding the unnecessary energy use that used to come with every turn of the tap.

What began as a small technical detail, a head that detaches from the spout, has ended up changing the way we think about the sink. Because once you’ve tried a pull-out tap, it’s hard to imagine your kitchen without one.
